How can I set Windows 11 Home to only update with my permission?

I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to configure Windows 11 Home Edition so that it only updates when I choose to allow it. I've searched for options but all the advice seems to focus on the Pro version. I also found out that if the OS isn't booted, the 'pause updates' timer still counts down, which caused me to lose some work because it pushed an update while I was away. With all the recent problematic updates, I'd really prefer to have full control over when updates are installed. Is there a setting for this, or is it not available?

Instead of stressing over Windows updates, I set up an internal drive and installed Macrium Reflect to create weekly system images. This way, I have a quick recovery option available if things go south after an update.

Unfortunately, you can't use the Group Policy Editor to manage updates on the Home edition, so you're stuck with the default settings. However, your best bet might be to stop the Windows Update service entirely and disable it. Just keep in mind that you’ll have to do updates manually if you go this route.

I hear you about the anxiety around updates! I tried using ShutUp10 for more control over my settings, and it looks like it works for Windows 11 too. Might be worth checking out.

I totally get where you're coming from. I saw some great deals on Windows 11 Pro licenses online for around $10. Switching might give you much better control over updates if you decide to go that route.

Honestly, you might consider switching to Linux if you want total control over your system. I’ve managed to move most of my workflow there, and it feels more comfortable to manage updates myself.
