How can I shut down a Windows 11 laptop from the sign-in screen?

I bought a new laptop with Windows 11 preinstalled, but I don't plan to use Windows and want to install Linux instead. I'm currently stuck at the Microsoft account sign-in screen and can't find a shutdown option. Holding the power button briefly hasn't done anything, and a few keyboard shortcuts didn't work either. I'm completely new to computers and would rather not sign in just to turn the machine off. Is there another way to shut it down, or should I let the battery drain?

On a laptop, connect the power adapter if needed, then press and hold the physical power button continuously for about 30 seconds. Donโt release it when the display turns blackโkeep holding until the laptop fully powers off. This is a forced shutdown, so it isnโt the preferred method for normal use, but itโs appropriate when youโre stuck at the sign-in screen.

You can also try Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Depending on the laptop and Windows configuration, the resulting screen may include a power icon in the lower-right corner. If that doesnโt appear, the extended power-button hold is the practical fallback.

Holding the power button down really should cut the power after roughly 30 seconds. A quick press may only put the laptop to sleep, so wait until it has completely shut down rather than stopping when the screen goes dark.

MellowOrbit42: That makes sense. I didnโt realize there was a specific amount of time to hold it, and I was worried that forcing it off was harmful. Iโll give it another try and make sure it fully powers down.
