My Lenovo ThinkPad has become extremely slow shortly after startup. It runs Windows 11 with an Intel Core i5-10310U, 16 GB of RAM, a 64-bit system, Intel UHD integrated graphics, and an SSD using about 198 GB of its 357 GB capacity. After logging in, it often takes about a minute before the desktop is responsive, and applications may freeze afterward. What step-by-step troubleshooting or maintenance should I try to improve its performance?

If the normal troubleshooting doesn’t help, back up your files and consider a clean Windows installation. That can remove accumulated software and configuration problems, but make sure your backups work before wiping anything. If you mainly use lightweight applications, a beginner-friendly Linux distribution is another option and may use fewer resources, though hardware and software compatibility should be checked first.
Avoid assuming that Windows 11 itself is too demanding for this hardware. The i5-10310U and 16 GB of RAM should handle ordinary browsing and office work. Look for heavy browser usage, unnecessary background utilities, failing storage, overheating, or a battery and power-management issue before replacing the operating system.
Start by booting into Safe Mode. Hold Shift while selecting Restart, then use the recovery options to enter Safe Mode. If the laptop runs normally there, a startup application or driver is probably causing the slowdown. Check Task Manager's Startup apps list and disable anything nonessential. Also install pending Windows and driver updates.
Sixteen gigabytes of RAM is generally enough for Windows 11, so downgrading solely because of the memory amount probably won’t solve this. Check Task Manager after logging in to see whether CPU, memory, or disk usage is hitting 100%. You can also run `sfc /scannow` from an administrator Command Prompt to check for damaged Windows system files.

Thanks, I’ll try Safe Mode first and check which programs are launching at startup.
