I've always wanted to learn how to build computers, but I'm not sure where to begin because there's so much to understand. My current prebuilt PC has been running hotter than I'd like, which motivated me to start learning now. The CPU reaches around 80–90°C during many tasks, while the GPU sits near 80°C. I also have two older spare PCs that I could practice on once I'm more confident. Are there any beginner-friendly guides, videos, or steps you'd recommend? I'm worried about accidentally damaging something.

For a future build, begin with your budget, target resolution, games or applications, and desired settings. Then make a parts list and check compatibility, especially the motherboard socket, memory type, case dimensions, power supply capacity, and cooler clearance. Use benchmark comparisons to balance the budget, and have someone review the list before ordering. Planning the parts first is much less stressful than trying to fix compatibility problems afterward.
Start with beginner PC-building videos, but watch several different creators rather than relying on one guide. Compare the advice and check whether experienced viewers point out mistakes. Search specifically for tutorials on identifying CPU and GPU overheating as well as complete PC assembly.
Before buying or assembling anything, troubleshoot the heat problem in your current PC. Check temperatures while idle and under load, confirm that the fans are spinning and oriented correctly, clean out dust, and make sure the cooler is mounted firmly. Around 80°C on a GPU can be normal under load, while a CPU reaching 90°C may be acceptable briefly but deserves investigation depending on the processor and workload. Prebuilt systems can have cramped cases or unusual airflow layouts.
I wasn’t sure whether those temperatures were automatically dangerous. The case does seem pretty cramped, so I’ll check the airflow and cooler before changing anything.
You can learn a lot by carefully taking apart and rebuilding the spare PCs. Start by labeling cables and taking photos before disconnecting anything. Read the manuals for the motherboard, case, power supply, and cooler; connector labels and motherboard diagrams are extremely useful. Most parts are sturdier than they look, but never force a connector and always switch off and unplug the power supply before working inside the case.
Don’t feel like you need to memorize everything before starting. A first build is mostly following a good guide, checking the manuals, and working slowly. Practice on the older machines first, and keep screws organized. If something doesn’t work, retrace each connection and check the motherboard’s diagnostic lights instead of immediately assuming a component is broken.
