How can I tell whether my NVMe SSD is causing Linux Mint to freeze during Steam updates?

I recently started using Linux Mint, and my computer completely freezes whenever Steam begins updating Dead by Daylight. Restarting hasn't fixed the issue. I had also noticed some problems shutting the computer down beforehand, which I ignored at the time. I suspect the NVMe SSD may be failing, but I'd like to verify that before replacing it. There's still about 400 GB of free space on the drive. What tests should I run?

You can also install and use nvme-cli to inspect and test an NVMe drive. It provides NVMe-specific health information that can supplement the smartctl results. Since the shutdown trouble started before the Steam freeze, checking system logs and memory stability may also be worthwhile if the drive tests look clean.

Check the driveโ€™s health data with smartctl, for example: `smartctl -a /dev/`. Look for reported errors, critical warnings, media errors, or a failing health status. If it reports no problems, the SSD isnโ€™t necessarily the cause, but that makes other possibilities worth investigating.

QuietMaple18: I ran the SMART check and it didnโ€™t show any errors. Thereโ€™s also plenty of free space, so the problem may be elsewhere.
