How can I tell which RAM upgrade is compatible with my PC?

I currently have 16GB of RAM, and my games sometimes crash when I play with Discord and Spotify open. Friends suggested upgrading the RAM, but I don't know whether the issue is actually memory-related or how to choose compatible modules. What should I check before buying anything?

Discord and Spotify can use memory, but 16GB is still enough for many gaming setups. Check which programs are consuming RAM in Task Manager, and consider testing the game without those apps or using Discord in a browser. If memory usage isnโ€™t close to full, investigate drivers, game files, overheating, or other hardware instead of buying RAM immediately.

Look at how your current 16GB is arranged. If itโ€™s one 16GB stick and you have an open slot, adding a matching 16GB module may work, ideally the same model and speed. If itโ€™s two 8GB sticks, replacing them with a 2x16GB kit is usually the safer option. Mixing kits can sometimes cause instability, and two sticks are generally preferable to four, especially with DDR5. Enable XMP or EXPO in the BIOS after installing the new kit if your system supports it.

AmberKite54: Also check how many physical slots your motherboard has. Some boards only have two, so there may not be room to add more without replacing the existing modules.

Check whether RAM is really the problem first. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, go to Performance > Memory, and watch the usage while the game and other apps are running. If memory is nearly full when the crashes happen, moving to 32GB could help. If there is plenty of free memory, the crashes may have another cause.

Before buying anything, find your motherboard model and check its memory compatibility list, often called the QVL. Youโ€™ll need to match the memory generation, such as DDR4 or DDR5, along with the supported speed and capacity. CPU-Z or Task Manager can show your current RAM type, speed, stick count, and sometimes the exact model number.
