I'm currently working as a Level 1/2 desktop support technician at an MSP and I'm interested in moving up to become a sysadmin in the next few years. What steps do I need to take to make this transition successfully?

One great way to kickstart your journey is to talk to your boss about taking on more advanced tasks. Show that you can handle more than just help desk issues and are eager for growth.

Here's a small but important tip: focus on using proper communication skills in written form. This will help you stand out, especially in interviews.

Try offering to help with the tasks that senior staff dislike. I did this with BlackBerries and moved up quickly! You'd be surprised how much volunteering can pay off.

I was in your position twenty years ago! After gaining experience and certifications, I moved up to sysadmin. The key is to keep learning and stay curious about new tech. Set high goals for yourself and don't be afraid to aim for the stars!

Reliability is key! Sysadmins need to be proactive, so instead of saying "I don't know," be the person who says "I'll find out." That's the mindset that really makes a difference.
