How can I turn my offline HTML/CSS/JavaScript app into a desktop application?

I'm still new to web development and want to build a Discord-inspired layout for a completely local, offline notes and file-organizing app. It would not need VoIP, accounts, networking, or synchronizationโI mainly want to manage notes, photos, videos, and other files on my own computer.
The front end is currently being built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Instead of opening an index.html file in a browser, I would like to package it as an installable desktop application that runs without an internet connection. Is this possible, and what technologies or concepts should I learn to make that transition?

For a truly standalone desktop executable, look at Electron or Tauri. Both can wrap your existing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in a desktop window. Electron is more widely documented and beginner-friendly, but it bundles Chromium and is relatively large. Tauri uses the operating system's WebView, produces much smaller builds, and is a good fit if you need access to local files.

Get the front end working as a normal web app first, then package it. That keeps the learning process manageable. Since your app is only for your own computer, you do not need to build accounts, servers, or synchronizationโjust learn how the chosen wrapper handles local storage and filesystem permissions.

A Progressive Web App (PWA) is probably the simplest place to start. It can be installed from a browser and made to work offline using a service worker, so it feels more like an application than a normal website. Keep in mind that it still relies on a browser engine, and browser file access is more limited than native desktop access.

You could also consider React Native or Flutter if you want to build a more traditional cross-platform application, but that would mean learning a larger framework and potentially rewriting much of your current front end. For the project you described, a PWA, Tauri, or Electron is likely a more direct path.

MellowQuartz42: That makes sense. This is only for my own computer, so I mainly need local storage and file access rather than anything involving multiple devices.
