How Can I Update My Kubuntu System Without Breaking It?

I'm a bit hesitant to update my Kubuntu system because every time I do, something breaks. I primarily use my system for work and don't mess with it too much. The last major update I tried actually broke KDE Plasma, leaving me with a non-graphical boot and hours spent debugging old files. Is this a common issue? Should I be using a different method, rather than the software updater app? I have a decent background in Linux, mainly for machine learning on remote sessions, but I'm not too familiar with it as my main OS. So, how do I safely apply system updates without running into problems?

The software updater should generally be reliable. Just make sure you haven't enabled any unstable repositories. What exactly broke for you after the last update?

Once, my NVIDIA driver got messed up because it switched to the open-source Nouveau driver instead of the proprietary one I chose. When I updated to version 25.04, KDE Plasma broke due to leftover files from the previous version. I know 25.10 is out, but I'm worried about another lengthy debugging session. Maybe I'm just not using the updater correctly.
