How Can I Upgrade My Basic VPN Gateway IP Addresses to Standard?

I've been putting off upgrading our VPN Gateway IP addresses because the documentation is pretty confusing to me, and our reseller support hasn't been helpful either. Microsoft is retiring the basic SKU public IP addresses after September 30, and I've already migrated all our VMs and other resources. The only thing left is several virtual network gateways, all on the basic SKU with basic SKU public IPs. I'm struggling to find any clear instructions on how to upgrade these IP addresses. Has anyone tackled this process before?

I had a similar issue recently! It was tough finding documentation, but here’s what I discovered: For your Virtual Network Gateway that’s using the Basic IP Address, head to the Configuration menu. There, you should find a 'Migrate' tab that can assist you. Just make sure to validate that the migration is possible before starting. Be aware that this might involve around 15 minutes of downtime. If that’s not acceptable, unfortunately, you'll need to create a new Virtual Network Gateway from scratch instead.

You should check to see if there's an Upgrade Button available on the Gateway itself, not on the IP address settings. I did this last week, but I had to clear my browser cache first for the button to show up.

To upgrade your IPs to standard, first, ensure they’re set to Static. Then, just click the little banner at the top of the IP overview page. It’s usually a straightforward process.
