I'm currently using an Acer Aspire TC-780 and I've been experiencing some frustrating stuttering and framerate drops while playing various games, particularly in "No Rest for the Wicked." I suspect that my processor might be the bottleneck since my hardware seems decent otherwise. I have an Intel Core i5-7400 CPU, and I'm curious about upgrading to a more modern processor that would be compatible with my motherboard. Can anyone confirm if my assumption is correct and suggest some good processor options? Thanks for your help!

If you're looking at Intel options, I’d steer clear of older models like the i7-7700. They can’t keep up with the newer titles that require more CPU cores. At this point, I’d suggest targeting at least a 6-core processor, like the Ryzen lineup, which is affordable and performs well in modern gaming scenarios. Avoid spending on older Intel CPUs as there are better value options with AMD right now.
Your current motherboard only supports Intel 7th gen CPUs, which might not give you the best performance for newer games. If you're open to it, I'd highly suggest switching to an AM4 socket motherboard and CPU combo. This way you can still use your DDR4 RAM, and you’ll get much better performance. Also, moving to a custom build might be the way to go since it's going to open up more upgrade paths down the line.
Yeah, it sounds like you're hitting a bottleneck with your current CPU, especially since it only has four cores. If you’re running modern games, it might struggle. I recommend looking into an AM4 upgrade, like the Ryzen 3600, which is a great value at around $50 used! Just check your power supply specs as older ones might not cut it for new hardware. If you’ve already replaced your power supply, awesome! A good motherboard will let you keep your DDR4 RAM, making it a solid upgrade for gaming.

I actually upgraded to a Ryzen setup recently and it was a game changer! Make sure your new power supply can handle the load, though. It’s worth it to invest a little more to avoid future issues.
