How can I use AI to learn coding without becoming dependent on it?

I'm learning programming through coding challenges, but I often ask AI for help and worry that I'm relying on it too much. When I get stuck, I sometimes realize I don't understand the fundamentals as well as I thought I did. What's a good way to practice solving problems independently while still using AI for limited guidance?

Build a foundation first: study data structures, algorithms, abstraction, and general problem-solving from a book or structured course. For each challenge, identify its topic or pattern, learn that concept, and then try the problem yourself. Explanations and walkthroughs can help, but copying a solution wonโt build the same skill. Use AI to speed up learning, not to do the thinking for you.

Change the way you prompt AI. Instead of asking for the solution, ask it to act like a tutor: have it ask you questions, give one small hint at a time, and wait for your response. If your approach fails, ask for test cases or help understanding the specific mistake rather than requesting corrected code. You should still be the person writing and explaining the final solution.

Think of AI as training wheels, not a replacement for practice. Type the code yourself, predict what it should do, and test it with small examples. Mistakes and getting stuck are part of learning, so donโt treat them as proof that youโre incapable. Gradually reduce the amount of help you request as familiar patterns start becoming easier.

Always attempt a brute-force solution first using concepts you already know. Give yourself a fixed amount of time to struggle with the problem, write down what you understand, and only then ask for a small hint about the next concept to consider. After solving it, close the AI chat and reimplement the solution from memory, then explain the time and space complexity.

MellowPine42: That makes sense. Iโve mostly relied on short notes instead of properly studying technical material, so I probably need to fix that foundation first.
