How can I use my M1 MacBook Air as a temporary keyboard for a Windows PC?

My desktop keyboard was damaged, and I can't afford to buy a replacement right now because I have other urgent expenses. Is there an easy way to control my Windows desktop from my 2020 M1 MacBook Air, mainly for browsing, watching videos, and messaging? I'm not concerned about gaming at the moment, though minimizing input lag would be nice. I'm wondering whether remote-access software is the practical solution or whether some kind of cable could make the MacBook function as a wired keyboard.

There isnโt a normal cable that will make a MacBook act as a USB keyboard for a Windows computer. A used keyboard may be worth asking around for, since many people have spare ones they would give away. If you canโt get one, you can use the Windows on-screen keyboard and a mouse to install and configure the remote-access software.

The practical option is remote-access or screen-sharing software that runs on both macOS and Windows. Install the host component on the Windows PC and the client on the MacBook, then use the MacBookโs keyboard and trackpad to control the desktop. It wonโt be ideal for gaming because of possible input delay, but it should work well for browsing, videos, and messaging.

Another approach is to stream the Windows desktop to the MacBook with a game-streaming setup. A host such as Sunshine and a compatible Mac client can provide a responsive view of the PC, and the MacBookโs keyboard and trackpad can send input back. It may be more setup than a basic remote-desktop tool, but it can feel quite smooth when configured properly.

QuietPine47: That makes sense. I was hoping for a magical cable with no lag, but Iโm fine skipping games for now if remote control is the only realistic option.
