I'm considering buying a refurbished ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 AMD from a local shop. Before paying, I want to check that it isn't still tied to an organization through Windows Autopilot, Azure AD, or Intune, and that it doesn't have a hardware-level lock such as a BIOS Supervisor Password or activated Absolute/Computrace.
My plan is to press F1 during startup and check that there is no Supervisor Password, review Security > Absolute Persistence Module to confirm it is enabled but not activated, reset Windows, boot from a Windows 11 USB installer, and complete setup until reaching the OOBE screens. I would connect it to the internet during setup and watch for a corporate sign-in or message saying the device belongs to an organization.
Is this a reliable way to detect enterprise enrollment? Can Autopilot or Intune enrollment be skipped or remain hidden during OOBE?

You need to test it while connected to the internet. If setup is completed offline, Windows may let you proceed temporarily, but the device can contact Microsoft later and receive its organization’s Autopilot or Intune configuration after you connect it at home. Ethernet is a good way to ensure the check happens during setup, although reliable Wi-Fi works too.
The BIOS password and Absolute checks are useful, but they do not confirm Autopilot status. Autopilot enrollment is associated with the device’s hardware identity in Microsoft’s service, so a normal reset or reinstall does not remove it. During OOBE, an internet-connected device may display an organization-branded setup or require a company account. However, a device can be registered in Intune without having a deployment profile assigned, so reaching the desktop is not an absolute guarantee.
I don’t have my own Intune tenant, so I can’t use the tenant-side hardware-hash checks. I’ll ask the refurbisher to confirm that the device has been removed from any previous organization before buying it.
There isn’t a completely foolproof buyer-side test. Autopilot behavior can depend on whether the device has a profile assigned, and enrollment might occur after a reset or after connecting to the internet. The safest approach is to have the seller remove the ThinkPad from its former organization’s Autopilot, Intune, and Azure AD records and provide written confirmation or let you complete an online OOBE test before purchase. A Supervisor Password or activated Absolute module is a separate issue and should also be cleared by the seller.
