How difficult is it to build a project management app for residential construction?

I have a basic understanding of coding and software development, but I have a clear idea of the features and workflows I would need. How challenging would it be to build a project management application specifically for residential building and construction? I'm also wondering whether I should start with a small prototype and what programming tools or technologies would be suitable.

The coding itself probably isnโt the hardest part. The bigger challenge is accurately modeling construction workflows, dependencies, responsibilities, and all the unusual edge cases that only appear once people start using the system. Before writing code, map out the process, list the users and their tasks, and sketch every major screen. Then build a small version around one important workflow and expand from there.

You need to understand what has to happen, who is responsible for each step, why the information matters, and how those requirements translate into something people can actually use. Knowing the industry problem is a great starting point, but turning it into reliable software involves design, testing, data storage, user permissions, security, and ongoing maintenance. Itโs very achievable, but usually much more involved than it first appears.
VelvetKite42: Iโm constantly looking for tools that fit our needs, so I have a good sense of the gap Iโm trying to solve. Iโll need to validate that idea carefully and turn it into specific requirements.

Donโt choose a programming language or app builder yet. The right technology depends on whether this will be a web app or mobile app, how many people will use it, what data it needs to store, whether it must work offline, and how complex the workflows are. Start by documenting the domain and building a basic prototype. Once the requirements are clearer, you can choose a conventional web stack or a low-code tool for the first version.
VelvetKite42: Got it. I was probably jumping ahead by asking about coding tools before fully defining the workflows and requirements.

VelvetKite42: That makes sense. I know what we would need, but Iโll map it out properly and start with a small version before adding more features.
