I've been studying computer science through distance learning for about two years, but I don't feel like I'm learning as effectively as I hoped. I recently encountered the topic of APIs and understand that they let software provide extra functionality or communicate with other applications, often behind the scenes. However, I'm still confused about how APIs actually work, how to practice using them, and how to create one myself. Can I build an API using a code editor such as Visual Studio Code, or do I need other tools?

At a basic level, an API is an interface that lets one piece of software interact with another. A common example is a web API that uses HTTP requests. One program sends a request such as asking for a list of names, the server checks and processes it, and then sends back a response. That response might contain data, such as JSON, or simply a status indicating whether the request succeeded.
APIs can seem confusing because the term covers several different things. It helps to learn them by focusing on what they do: why an API is needed, how a client accesses it, how the server is built, what data is exchanged, and how requests are authenticated and secured. Try using a simple public web API first, then create a small server with a programming language and framework you already know. Visual Studio Code is fine for writing the code; you’ll also need to run the server and test requests with a browser, command-line tool, or API client.
A practical way to understand APIs is to build a tiny one. For example, make a server with an endpoint like GET /names that returns a short JSON list. Then write another program or use a browser to request that endpoint. The client sends the request, your server runs the corresponding function, and the function returns the result. Once that works, add endpoints for creating, editing, and deleting data, along with input validation and authentication.
