I'm trying to understand how to identify hardware bottlenecks when choosing a CPU and GPU combination. I've heard that online bottleneck calculators aren't very reliable, so what's a better way to decide whether two components are a good match? For example, would a Ryzen 7 5800X paired with a Gigabyte Radeon RX 7600 XT 16GB make sense?

The age difference between the CPU and GPU isn’t what determines a bottleneck. What matters is the workload. Higher resolutions and demanding visual settings usually put more pressure on the GPU, while very high refresh rates, simulation-heavy games, and some productivity applications can make CPU performance more important. Check actual benchmarks for your games and target settings instead of trusting a single calculator.
For gaming, a GPU bottleneck is usually preferable because it means the graphics card is being fully used. A Ryzen 7 5800X will generally be more than enough for an RX 7600 XT, so the GPU will often limit performance, but that isn’t a problem. If you have extra money, putting it toward a faster GPU will usually improve gaming performance more than replacing the CPU, motherboard, and memory.
There isn’t one universal CPU-to-GPU match. The limiting component depends on the games or programs you use, your resolution and settings, and the frame rate you want. Every system will have some bottleneck, and that’s normal.
That makes sense, but how do I make sure the bottleneck is as small as reasonably possible?
