How do I connect to the console on my Cisco ISR1100X router?

I recently got a Cisco ISR1100X router but I'm having trouble connecting to its console using my Windows laptop and a serial to RJ45 cable. When I try using Putty, I just see a cursor in the upper left corner and can't get any response from the router. Can anyone help me figure this out? Thanks!

It sounds like the serial to RJ45 setup isn’t going to work the way you think. You need a USB to serial adapter for your laptop instead. Go check your device manager to see which COM port is assigned (like COM1). You’ll want to use that port in Putty to connect properly.
