How do I ensure action items from standups actually get completed?

In our team, we often discuss action items during standups—like addressing blockers or checking in on issues. However, these items usually get mentioned verbally and then never seem to get tracked, leading to them being forgotten by the next standup. We communicate asynchronously, with standups documented in Slack, but those action items still seem to fade away. What strategies do other development teams use to keep track of and follow up on these action items?

If there’s no clear accountability—like a dedicated owner or deadlines—those action items might fade away. It’s crucial to have regular reviews, so previous commitments are revisited instead of jumping directly to new updates.

This is pretty common in many teams. Make sure someone takes charge of the action items and checks in with those responsible. If something is holding you back, let your project manager know so they can help resolve it. It’s all about keeping that accountability, and using Jira can help with that track.

You might want to start tracking those action items more formally. Consider adding them as Jira stories or tasks so they don't just float away after the meeting.

For our team, we always create a ticket for any actionable item in Jira. Once it’s on the board, it gets assigned to someone, and we follow up on it in the next meeting. That keeps everyone accountable.
