How do I install mods for Windows games on Linux?

I recently switched from Windows to Linux and have been testing games I already owned. Performance has been fairly similar so far, and now I'm playing Cyberpunk 2077. I'm not sure whether installing mods under Linux works the same way, especially when running the game through Proton. What's the usual process and where should mod files go?

The exact location depends on the game. Some mods are copied directly into the game’s installation folder, while others require a mod manager or a game-specific launcher. For Proton games, the Windows-style files are stored inside the game’s Proton prefix, which acts like a virtual C: drive. Check the game’s documentation before copying anything, and make a backup so you can restore the original files.

Most Windows mod tools can work through Proton, but tools or patches that launch their own .exe may need extra setup. It’s usually safer to run them with the game’s Proton prefix rather than replacing the game executable. If a mod manager supports Linux or Proton directly, use that instead of manually renaming files.

Amethyst Mod Manager is probably the easiest option to try. It works somewhat like a lightweight combination of Vortex and Mod Organizer, and it can install mods from Nexus Mods, including collections.

For a game running through Proton, modding is generally similar to modding it on Windows. First check whether the game uses a Windows executable. In Steam, open the game’s properties and browse the installed files. Mods that normally go beside the game’s .exe usually belong in that same game directory.
