I need to replace my motherboard and switch from an Intel-based system to AMD, but I must keep using my current PC until the moment I shut it down for the final time. Disconnect both HDDs before starting Windows Setup. Leaving extra drives connected makes it easier to select or format the wrong disk, and the installer can sometimes place boot files on a different drive. Reconnect the HDDs only after Windows is installed and working, then verify that the RAID array is recognized before making any changes to it.
Do not assume the RAID disks will automatically migrate perfectly to the new motherboard. RAID is not a backup, and failure to recognize the controller or configuration could make the array inaccessible. Copy anything irreplaceable elsewhere before beginning, especially if the array uses RAID 0 or contains the only copy of important files.
You can technically move the existing Windows installation directly to the new hardware and remove old drivers afterward, but that is less reliable than reinstalling from scratch after a major platform change. Since you already plan to wipe the SSD, there is no need to prepare special Intel-to-AMD changes beforehand beyond backing up files and creating the Windows USB installer.
Since you want a clean installation, shut down the old computer normally, move only the SSD to the new system, and boot from a Windows installation USB. Choose the custom installation option, delete the existing partitions on the SSD, select the resulting unallocated space, and let Windows create the required partitions automatically. Back up anything important from the SSD first, because this process erases it. Windows should activate through your Microsoft account or product key, although a hardware change can occasionally require activation troubleshooting.
The RAID configuration matters here. Make sure you know whether it is motherboard-managed RAID, Windows Storage Spaces, or a dedicated controller, and back up important data to another independent drive before moving the hardware.
