How do I set up a hotspot on my Android phone, and do I need extra equipment?

I'm not very comfortable with technology, and I recently bought a new Android phone through Straight Talk. I use up my mobile data quickly at home, so I was wondering whether a hotspot could help me save data for when I'm away. Is setting one up difficult for a beginner? Do I need to buy a separate device or other equipment, and will it work anywhere?

A hotspot probably won't solve the problem you're describing. It shares your phone's cellular data with other devices, so using it at home would still use the same mobile data allowance—and may use it even faster. If you want to avoid using phone data at home, a regular home internet connection with Wi-Fi would be the better option. If you only need occasional internet access, the phone's built-in hotspot may still be useful.

A separate hotspot device uses its own SIM card and mobile data plan to create a Wi-Fi network. It is portable and usually fairly easy to set up, but you would normally need another line or data plan. Before buying one, check whether your current phone plan includes hotspot data and how much is allowed.

I still have the SIM card from my old phone because its screen cracked. Would that work in a separate hotspot?

Most newer Android phones already have a built-in mobile hotspot, so you probably don't need to purchase a separate hotspot device. Open Settings and look for an option called Mobile Hotspot or Hotspot & Tethering. Turn it on, choose a network name and password, then connect your computer or another device to it like regular Wi-Fi.

What does an integrated hotspot mean? My phone is brand new and I bought it through Straight Talk at Walmart.
