How Do I Transition from a Computer Vision Focus to a C++ Development Career?

I'm currently a prospective graduate student focusing on computer vision, but my undergrad degree isn't in computer science. I've been self-studying various topics like CS50, C/C++, basic Python, data structures, operating systems, computer organization, and networks. I've discovered a strong interest in C++, particularly for Linux and game development, and I'm considering a career shift away from computer vision, although I still need the degree. I'm wondering how to plan my studies to align with my career goals. Is it realistic to move from a computer vision focus to something C++-centric? Also, what aspects of computer vision could be beneficial for Linux or game development?

I think a lot of aspiring programmers feel the same way about moving from resumes to real programming jobs! Just take it one step at a time, and don't hesitate to ask for guidance when you need it. Good luck!

Are we talking about computer vision here or just going from CV to the programming world?

Great news! Computer vision and C++ often go hand in hand, especially since high performance is crucial in CV projects. I'd suggest looking into fields like robotics, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR). These areas are heavily tied to C++ and could really spark your interest. Have a look at those and see if one captures your attention. Once you find something that excites you, dive in and start learning more about it!

Is making that switch realistic? I’ve been a web developer for five years with no relevant degree. Can I still transition?

Thanks for the tips! Robotics sounds cool, but game engines really catch my eye. Is there a link between game engines and computer graphics? I know a bit about CG, but I’m not entirely sure how they connect or what tools like OpenCV and Unreal Engine are all about. Is this a hard shift?
