How Do Professional Programmers Learn to Build Software?

I spent about two months learning the basics of C after coming from a Python background, and I'm finding it much more difficult than expected. What should I focus on next to become capable of building the kinds of software I choose? I'm especially interested in understanding how professional programmers develop their skills beyond learning language syntax.

The biggest step is building projects. Choose something you genuinely want to make, then learn the tools, concepts, and techniques required as you go. Even small projects teach you far more about programming than studying syntax in isolation.

Itโs also worth learning how software is organized: architecture, separation of responsibilities, interfaces, and how components communicate. Good structure makes it easier to find bugs and add features. Pick a specific application you want to create and study those design ideas in context.

Focus on fundamentals that apply across languages: problem-solving, algorithms, data structures, debugging, and basic software design. Once those ideas become familiar, learning another language is usually much easier because the syntax is only one part of programming.

You need experience, and that takes longer than a couple of months. Start with manageable programs, finish them, debug them, and gradually increase the complexity. Over time youโll get better at breaking large problems into smaller ones.
