I'd also like to understand how a jammer differs from something like a Faraday cage or ordinary wireless interference.

There are a few different things people call Wi-Fi blockers. A Faraday cage or other conductive material can reflect or absorb radio energy, preventing a device inside from communicating normally. A jammer works differently: it transmits interference on the same Wi-Fi frequencies, overwhelming legitimate signals so devices can’t reliably send or receive data.
