I'm trying to choose a gaming monitor, but every answer seems to introduce five more things I need to research. I understand the basics of resolution and refresh rate, but I'm less sure how much response time, IPS versus VA versus OLED, FreeSync or G-Sync, HDR, and HDMI versions really matter.
I mainly play a mix of FPS games and single-player titles, so I want smooth motion without giving up image quality. I'm currently considering a 27-inch 1440p monitor with at least 144Hz or 165Hz, but I'm wondering whether that is still the best balance or if it makes sense to spend more on 240Hz or 4K.
For people who have compared a lot of monitors, which specifications do you check first? Which features tend to sound impressive on the box but aren't worth paying extra for?

Your graphics card and the games you play should influence the choice, but they don’t determine whether a monitor is good. A powerful GPU makes high refresh rates and higher resolutions easier to use, while a weaker system may benefit more from 1440p at 144Hz than from an expensive 4K 240Hz display. Check benchmarks for the games you actually play, then buy based on realistic frame rates rather than the maximum refresh rate printed on the monitor.
Panel choice depends on what bothers you most. OLED gives you excellent contrast and extremely fast pixel response, but it costs more and can involve burn-in concerns. IPS usually offers a strong balance of color, viewing angles, and motion performance. VA can provide better contrast than IPS, though some models show dark-level smearing. HDR is only worth treating as a major selling point when the display has strong brightness and effective local dimming; basic HDR labels often don’t mean much.
For most people, 27-inch 1440p at 144–180Hz is still a great middle ground. It gives you a sharp image and smooth motion without requiring the hardware needed to drive 4K at high frame rates. 240Hz is mainly worthwhile if you play competitive shooters seriously and your system can consistently produce very high frame rates. Otherwise, the difference is much smaller than moving from 60Hz to 144Hz.
Exactly. Hardware affects which resolution and refresh rate make sense, but even a lower-end system can still benefit from a better panel, lower latency, and smoother VRR support. It isn’t only about matching the monitor’s refresh rate to the GPU.
