I've been working through an introductory Python programming course since May, but I often feel like I'm failing. Learning to code feels very unfamiliar, and I'm not sure how much of what I study is actually sticking. Almost every program I write seems to contain at least one small, easy-to-miss error, which can leave me feeling completely stuck. For people who have been through this stage, what helped you get past these walls and build confidence?

Small mistakes are a normal part of learning, not evidence that you’re incapable. Every bug you find and solve—especially when you work through it yourself—is experience that makes similar problems easier to recognize later. Give yourself time, keep practicing, and try not to treat each error as a personal failure.
A few months of studying independently is still a very short time, so struggling at this point is completely normal. Many experienced programmers still make basic mistakes and have to stop and ask themselves why they wrote something a certain way. If you’re continuing to work through difficult material, that’s evidence that you are learning, even when it doesn’t feel that way.
Try practicing with small, focused exercises before taking on larger projects. Websites such as CodingBat offer short Python problems, and Exercism is useful once you want longer challenges. Taking notes and building small projects can also help information stick, especially if simply watching lessons doesn’t feel effective.
Being stuck is part of the learning process. Instead of expecting yourself to remember every bit of syntax, focus on what the program should do and divide the task into smaller steps. A debugger can also be more useful than scattering print statements everywhere—sometimes the whole problem really is just a lowercase letter where a number should be. With time, you start recognizing patterns and become better at figuring out why you’re stuck.
It may help to spend some time on computer science fundamentals as well as Python syntax. A fundamentals-focused course can build a stronger mental framework for breaking problems down and thinking logically, while a Python course mainly teaches the language itself.
