I built this system in 2025 and would like a realistic estimate of how long it should remain a high-end-feeling machine for my workloads. It has an MSI RTX 5090 Suprim SOC air-cooled graphics card, a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, 64 GB of DDR5-6000 CL26 memory, and two Samsung 990 Pro SSDs—a 4 TB drive and a 1 TB drive.
My main gaming use is 1080p competitive play, especially Marvel Rivals. I would like to stay near 225 FPS using low settings for as long as practical. I also play some demanding AAA games, such as Resident Evil and the upcoming Jedi sequel, but I usually cap those at 120 FPS and am comfortable lowering graphical settings over time.
The system is also used for 4K film editing, color grading, and some visual-effects work in DaVinci Resolve Studio. Since high-end hardware is expensive, I would prefer to keep the build for as long as it remains sensible rather than upgrading on a fixed schedule. How many years do you think it will deliver a genuinely high-end experience, and when might an upgrade become worthwhile for gaming or editing?
The GPU warranty expires in June 2028, which is also making me think about the card's expected lifespan and how carefully I should protect the system after that.

The editing workload is more likely to determine when an upgrade becomes worthwhile. The CPU, GPU, and 64 GB of RAM should be excellent for years, but newer codecs, heavier effects, larger projects, and increasingly demanding timelines could make an upgrade attractive sooner. I’d estimate roughly five years before you start seriously considering improvements for professional editing, while the machine could remain perfectly usable considerably longer.
The hardware itself could easily last close to a decade or more if it is kept cool and maintained. A previous-generation gaming system can remain capable for many years, especially when the owner is willing to lower settings or change resolution. Your first meaningful upgrade might be the graphics card if you move to higher-resolution gaming, while the CPU should remain useful for a long time.
There is no exact expiration date for a PC. It will remain useful until it stops meeting your targets, and those targets can change. A top-tier system might be the fastest option for three or four years, remain very capable for another five or more, and still function for much longer after that. You may eventually upgrade because you want newer features or better export times rather than because the current system suddenly becomes unusable.
For 1080p competitive gaming, this is massive overkill. Even several years from now, you should be able to maintain very high frame rates by keeping settings low and using upscaling or frame-generation features where they make sense. Around 8–10 years of useful gaming life is a reasonable expectation, although “high-end” will always depend on what newer hardware offers and what performance you personally consider acceptable.
Focus less on the calendar and more on temperatures, stability, storage health, and actual project performance. Keep the GPU and CPU properly cooled, clean dust out periodically, and monitor the SSDs. A good UPS is worthwhile protection against brownouts and power problems. With reasonable maintenance, I’d expect this system to serve your gaming needs for roughly 8–10 years, with editing upgrades depending on how demanding your projects become.

That makes sense. I’m mainly trying to separate actual performance limits from the temptation to upgrade simply because newer parts are available. I’m comfortable lowering settings as long as competitive frame rates and editing performance remain good.
