I'm considering whether the Honeywell PTM7950 phase-change material reportedly used on some Asus graphics cards offers a meaningful advantage over the conventional thermal paste used by brands such as PNY. I currently have a GeForce RTX 5060 Ti and have owned several GPUs, but I've never paid much attention to the type of thermal interface material they use. Is PTM7950 significantly better in real-world temperatures, performance, or longevity, and should it influence a future GPU purchase?

Unless the GPU is unusually hot, throttling, or performing below expectations, there’s no need to worry about which thermal material it uses. Case airflow, ambient room temperature, the cooler design, and the card’s power settings will usually matter more.
PTM7950 can perform better than ordinary paste, especially over time and under sustained GPU loads, which may help a card maintain boost clocks. However, the practical difference is usually modest. A good conventional paste can also last for years, so this isn’t normally a deciding factor when choosing between graphics cards.
Thermal paste is often given more importance than it deserves. Replacing it might reduce temperatures by roughly 1–5°C, but it generally won’t transform a hot, loud card into a cool and silent one. If the GPU is already operating within its normal temperature range, the difference in performance and lifespan is usually negligible.
That makes sense. I’m not planning to replace the material on my current card; I was mainly wondering whether using PTM7950 should make me favor one manufacturer over another for a possible 5070 Ti upgrade.

I’d probably undervolt the card anyway, so maintaining maximum boost clocks isn’t a major concern for me. It sounds like the thermal interface probably shouldn’t affect my choice much.
