How much gaming performance would I gain moving from an i5-10600K to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D?

I'm considering replacing my Core i5-10600K with a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and want to know what kind of FPS improvement I could realistically expect. I currently use a Radeon RX 6700 XT, though I may upgrade the graphics card later. Would the CPU upgrade be worthwhile, especially for gaming?

It makes more sense if you plan to install a substantially faster GPU later or want very high refresh rates at 1080p. With the current 6700 XT, Iโd only upgrade now if youโre seeing CPU-limited performance, stuttering, or poor frame-time consistency. Otherwise, saving the money for the future GPU upgrade is probably the better move.

With the RX 6700 XT, the improvement probably wonโt be huge in most games. You could see better 1% lows and smoother frame times, but the average FPS gain depends heavily on the game, resolution, and settings. A 10600K is still generally capable of keeping up with that GPU.

Keep in mind this isnโt a drop-in upgrade. The 5800X3D uses AMDโs AM4 socket, so you would need a compatible motherboard, although you can reuse DDR4 memory. Once you add the motherboard cost, moving to a newer platform may be worth comparing unless you find a good deal on the 5800X3D and board.

Resolution makes a big difference. At 1080p, especially in esports or CPU-heavy games, the 5800X3D can provide a noticeable uplift. At 1440p the gain is usually more modest, and at 4K youโll often be limited by the graphics card instead. Check your GPU usage while gaming: if it is already near 100%, a CPU upgrade wonโt change much.

MellowOrbit42: That makes sense. Iโll check CPU and GPU utilization in the games I play before deciding, rather than expecting a fixed FPS increase.
