How Much Should I Save for a Solid Gaming PC?

My PS5 was damaged by a lightning-related power surge, and repairing it could cost up to about $320 USD—possibly more once parts and labor are included. Rather than put that money toward an uncertain repair, I'm considering saving for a gaming PC instead. I'd mainly use it for gaming, browsing the internet, and some studying. I'm not very experienced with choosing compatible parts, though, and my full-time job has been slow, so my budget is limited. I've seen builds ranging from $1,000 to $2,000, but I'm not sure what offers good value. How much should I realistically save for a well-balanced PC, and would that budget be enough for comfortable 1440p gaming?

A higher-end 1440p setup with a 144 Hz or faster monitor in mind could cost closer to $1,800–$2,200. Anything around $3,000 or more is generally overkill for your stated uses unless you want top-tier performance, ultra-high refresh rates, or a lot of future-proofing.

If you’re willing to buy used, about $1,200 could potentially get you much more performance than buying all-new parts. Gaming PCs with strong modern graphics cards sometimes appear around that price, but inspect the system carefully, verify the parts, and test it before paying.

For a new, well-balanced mid-range PC, plan on roughly $1,300–$1,500 USD. That should be enough for a solid gaming system, especially if you’re targeting 1440p rather than extremely high refresh rates. You may also need to budget separately for a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and operating system if you don’t already have them.

Around $1,100 can get you a decent prebuilt, especially when retailers have sales. It may not have the best upgrade path or premium parts, but it can be a practical option if you don’t feel comfortable selecting and assembling every component yourself.
