How much VRAM do I really need for Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p?

I'm planning a gaming PC with a Ryzen 5 5500, Ryzen 5 5600, or possibly a Ryzen 7 3800X, paired with 16GB of DDR4 memory. I'm considering an RTX 3060 Ti, but I'm unsure whether its 8GB of VRAM will be enough for Cyberpunk 2077 at fairly high settings and 1440p. Would an older RTX 2080 Ti with 11GB be a better choice, or should I look at another GPU? I mostly play competitive shooters and story games such as DOOM Eternal and Dying Light, and my monitor supports up to 144Hz at 1440p.

A Ryzen 5 5500 or 5600 should be fine for this build, especially at 1440p. For your monitor and game selection, prioritize the strongest GPU you can afford rather than choosing a card just because it has a little more VRAM. Check real 1440p benchmarks for the exact settings you want, since an RTX 4060 is not automatically a meaningful upgrade over a 3060 Ti.

VRAM usage depends heavily on resolution, texture quality, ray tracing, and mods. Cyberpunk should be playable at 1440p on a 3060 Ti with reasonable settings, while path tracing, high-resolution texture packs, and heavy ray tracing can push 8GB cards into stuttering and frame-time issues. If you plan to keep the GPU for many years, getting at least 12GB would give you more breathing room.

An RTX 2080 Ti has more VRAM, but itโ€™s an older architecture and may not be a worthwhile upgrade over a 3060 Ti unless you find it significantly cheaper. If similarly priced, consider a newer card with 10โ€“16GB of VRAM instead. More VRAM doesnโ€™t improve performance by itself; it only helps when the game actually needs it.

VRAM mainly matters when you run out of it. At 1440p, 8GB is usually workable if you use sensible texture settings and avoid heavy ray tracing or large texture mods. The 3060 Ti should run Cyberpunk well, but you shouldnโ€™t expect maximum settings and high frame rates at the same time.

MellowPine47: I mostly play competitive shooters and a few story games, so Iโ€™m fine lowering settings if needed. I was mainly wondering whether 8GB would be a serious limitation at 1440p.

The GPUโ€™s processing power is just as important as its VRAM. An RTX 3060 Ti is not powerful enough to make maxed-out Cyberpunk settings a realistic target, so its 8GB of VRAM probably wonโ€™t be the only limitation. The game should still look good with adjusted settings, though.
