How should I approach buying my first gaming PC with a $1,000 budget?

I've always played games on consoles and currently use a PS5, but I'm interested in getting my first gaming PC. My maximum budget is around $1,000, although I realize prices can vary a lot. I'm not sure whether I should build one myself, buy a prebuilt system, or look for a used PC. Where should I start, and what should I learn before making a purchase?

A $1,000 budget can get you a capable entry-level or lower-midrange gaming PC, but it may not consistently match a PS5 in graphics and optimization. Remember to budget for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and possibly Windows if you donโ€™t already have those. A prebuilt can be simpler for a first PC, while building usually gives you better value if youโ€™re comfortable learning.

Start by learning the basics of the main components: the CPU, graphics card, memory, storage, and cooling. You donโ€™t need to memorize every model, but understanding the generations and performance tiers will make shopping much easier. Also check the recommended specifications for the games you want to play, then aim for a system that meets or exceeds them.

First decide whether you want to build it yourself, buy a prebuilt, or consider a used system. Your location matters too, since prices and availability can differ significantly. If you buy used, compare the parts carefully rather than judging the PC by its age alone.
