How should I choose and position intake and exhaust fans for my new PC?

I'm building my first PC and I'm confused about case-fan types and purchasing options. I understand that fans can be used as intake or exhaust, but I'm not sure when to choose standard-blade versus reverse-blade fans. I'm considering buying a three-pack and using two fans on the side as intake and one at the rear as exhaust, but I'm not sure whether the fans can be separated and installed in different locations. Would it be better to buy a three-pack or purchase a single fan specifically for rear exhaust? I'm planning to install the fans after the rest of the build is complete and would appreciate advice on the best arrangement for this build.

Yes, you can split up a three-pack and install the fans wherever they fit. Standard fans can usually be mounted in either position; just orient them so the airflow arrows point into the case for intake and out of the case for exhaust. Using matching fans also makes fan-speed control more predictable and can help maintain slightly positive pressure, which reduces dust entering through unfiltered gaps.

So the three fans don’t have to stay together as a set, and I can use one of them as the rear exhaust?

Reverse-blade fans are mainly useful when you want the attractive side of the fan visible while it is being used as an intake. For a typical setup, reverse-blade fans can be used on the side or front as intake, while normal-blade fans are commonly used at the rear as exhaust. Functionally, the important thing is the airflow direction and how the fans physically fit in the case.

The usual airflow path is from the front or side of the case toward the rear. Side or front fans should generally be configured as intake, while the rear fan should exhaust warm air. A top-mounted fan can also be used as exhaust, but it is often optional.

That makes sense. Can I buy a three-pack and use only one of those fans at the rear while using the other two for intake, or do the fans need to be bought as separate intake and exhaust models?
