How should I configure Ubuntu or Debian for gaming?

I'm considering switching to Ubuntu or Debian Stable and want a reliable, long-term gaming system rather than a rolling-release distribution. My hardware is a Ryzen 5 5600X, Radeon RX 7600, and 64 GB of RAM.

I'd like advice on setting everything up properly. Is GameMode included by default, and is it important enough to install manually? What benefits would I miss without it? How should MangoHud and GOverlay be installed and configured? Are there any other tools or system settings worth using for gaming on Ubuntu or Debian?

I'm also interested in using Lutris for games outside Steam. Does Lutris install and manage Wine and related components automatically, or should I install Wine and Winetricks separately?

I'm prioritizing a stable, established distribution that is likely to remain well supported for years, which is why I'm mainly comparing Ubuntu and Debian. I've also heard about gaming-focused options such as Bazzite, but I'm unsure whether an immutable system would be practical for everyday work as well as gaming.

Installing Lutris generally gives you the basic Wine integration, so you don’t normally need to install Wine separately before installing Lutris. Lutris can download and manage Wine runners and other game dependencies as needed. You may occasionally need extra components for a particular title, but that is usually handled through the game’s runner or configuration options.

A gaming-focused option such as Bazzite is another possibility and is designed to work well out of the box for games. Its immutable design can take some getting used to, though, especially if you regularly install development tools or other system-level software for work. Ubuntu is likely the simpler conventional choice, while Debian Stable emphasizes long-term stability and may require more manual setup for newer gaming software.

Before adding lots of tweaks, make sure the graphics driver, Vulkan packages, and 32-bit libraries are installed correctly. After that, Steam, Lutris, GameMode, and MangoHud cover most people’s needs. Extra tweaks are usually game-specific, and blindly applying performance commands can make troubleshooting harder rather than improving performance.

GameMode, MangoHud, and similar tools can be installed on essentially any mainstream Linux distribution, so you aren’t locked into a gaming-specific system. GameMode is optional: it can apply temporary performance settings while a game runs, but many systems work perfectly well without it. MangoHud provides an in-game performance overlay, while GOverlay is a graphical configuration tool; after installing them, you may still need to enable the overlay for each game or launcher.
