I'm planning to celebrate reaching a major weight-loss milestone by upgrading my PC. My current system has a Ryzen 5 3600, Gigabyte B450M DS3H WiFi motherboard, DeepCool LS520 AIO cooler, and a Lian Li Lancool 250M Mesh case. I want to move to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D with an ASRock B550M Steel Legend motherboard, while continuing to use CachyOS Linux. I have almost no PC-building experience beyond installing two RAM sticks, so I'm looking for a detailed, beginner-friendly process for replacing the motherboard and CPU. I currently use an RX 6600 and may upgrade to an RX 9060 XT later; my power supply is rated at 750W.

Be cautious with four RAM sticks. Even if both pairs are rated for 3200 MT/s, using four modules puts more load on the memory controller and may require running at a lower speed or slightly looser settings. Start with the motherboard’s default memory settings, confirm the system is stable, and only then enable XMP/DOCP. If it becomes unstable, reduce the memory speed rather than assuming the CPU or board is defective.
You can reuse the LS520 if you have the correct AM4 mounting hardware, but replace the thermal paste and inspect the pump and radiator fans while everything is accessible. A good tower air cooler is also a simpler alternative and is sufficient for the 5800X3D.
A motherboard swap is basically a full rebuild because you’ll need to disconnect most components to remove the old board. Before starting, back up anything important, take photos of your current cable connections, and download the ASRock manual and BIOS files. Check that the board’s BIOS supports the 5800X3D; if possible, update the BIOS while the old CPU is still installed, since some boards may need a newer BIOS before they can boot with the 5800X3D.
Shut down the system, switch off and unplug the power supply, and hold the power button for a few seconds. Remove the GPU, RAM, storage cables, front-panel connectors, power cables, and cooler. Transfer the motherboard standoffs if necessary, install the CPU and cooler on the new board outside the case, then install the RAM before mounting the board. Reconnect the 24-pin motherboard cable, CPU power cable, storage, front-panel wiring, fans, GPU, and USB/audio connectors. Double-check every connection before powering on.
The motherboard change normally does not require reinstalling CachyOS. Linux should boot using the same drive, although you may need to check your boot order, enable your preferred memory profile, and reinstall or regenerate bootloader configuration only if the system does not find the installation. Keep a live USB available in case troubleshooting is needed. After booting, update the system and verify temperatures, memory capacity, networking, audio, and GPU drivers.
For a first build, label cables as you unplug them and take close-up photos of the front-panel connectors. Those tiny power-switch and LED plugs are one of the easiest parts to misconnect.

I’ve had crashes with the memory profile enabled since adding the other two sticks. All four modules are supposedly 3200, but I’ll test them at default settings first and lower the speed if needed.
