How should I prepare for open-ended programming interview questions?

Technical interviews often ask about languages, frameworks, and other technologies, but many questions do not have a single short answer. I find myself depending on articles or AI-generated explanations, which can sometimes be inaccurate or oversimplified. What is the most effective way to learn these topics and prepare answers without just memorizing scripts?

Many interview questions are checking whether you have actually used or debugged something, not whether you can recite its definition. For each likely topic, create a tiny demonstration and explain it aloud from memory without notes. Recording yourself can feel awkward, but it quickly reveals which explanations are unclear or incomplete.

Reading alone is not enough. Whenever you study a topic, build the smallest example you can from scratch. Practical experience exposes gaps that articles often hide and gives you something concrete to discuss during an interview.

MellowCedar42: That makes sense. Applying the idea immediately should make it easier to remember and explain instead of just recognizing the words from an article.

Practice communicating as much as studying. Research a topic using several reliable sources, build a small project, write down possible questions, and rehearse concise answers without notes. If you get stuck, review the material and try again. During the interview, give the simple explanation first and invite follow-up questions before going into deeper details. You can say things like, "I can explain the trade-offs or give an example if that would help."

You cannot realistically predict every question, so focus on building a strong understanding of programming and computer science fundamentals. Read broadly, study topics that interest you, and aim to understand how things work rather than memorizing prepared answers.
