How Should I Spend 15 Days Preparing for a Backend Internship?

I'm a second-year computer science student with beginner-level Node.js experience. I've completed tutorials and slightly extended several projects, including CRUD APIs, a basic AI chatbot backend, and JWT-based authentication and authorization. I understand the fundamentals, but I haven't yet built many projects entirely on my own. I have 15 days before I plan to start applying for internships. I don't expect to become an expert in that time; I want to become confident enough to apply and perform reasonably well in interviews. What backend topics should I prioritize, what project would provide the best value, how should I balance data structures and algorithms practice with project work, and what gaps are most common among students at my level? If you had 15 days to help someone become more internship-ready, how would you structure the preparation?

For a two-week sprint, a reasonable split is around 60% DSA and 40% project work. Coding assessments often happen before interviews, so practice common easy and medium problems involving arrays, strings, hash maps, two pointers, stacks, queues, and basic recursion. For the project, prioritize clean API design, validation, authentication, database integration, meaningful error responses, testing, and a clear README over adding lots of features.

Technical preparation isnโ€™t the whole picture. Spend time practicing how you explain your projects, introduce yourself, describe problems you solved, and discuss decisions you would change. Many students can reproduce a tutorial but struggle to reason independently or communicate their work. Start applying as soon as practical rather than waiting for perfect preparation, and use interview feedback to guide what you study next.

Donโ€™t treat the 15 days as a deadline for learning. Start applying when youโ€™re ready and keep improving afterward. In such a short period, focus on maximizing your chances rather than trying to master backend development. Build one small project completely from scratch without following a tutorial, such as a book tracker or movie watchlist API. Keep the scope manageable, but make sure you understand every line and can explain your design choices, trade-offs, authentication approach, error handling, and data model.

MellowCedar42: Iโ€™ll keep learning after the 15 days as well. I mainly want to use this initial period to become competent and confident enough to start interviewing.
