How Should I Start Preparing for My First Hackathon?

I'm thinking about participating in an upcoming SIH hackathon, but my experience is limited to basic programming. I've been trying to study several different topics at once, and I'm worried I'm focusing on the wrong things. If you have experience building hackathon projects, what should I learn first, how should I choose a problem, and where should I study?

Donโt wait until you feel ready or try to study every possible technology. Pick one problem statement and make the simplest working version first. After that, add useful improvements only if thereโs enough time. A clear explanation of what works now and what you would improve later is often more valuable than a complicated but unfinished project.

Start by reading the hackathon rules and problem statements carefully. Choose a challenge that matches the programming language you already know instead of trying to learn an entirely new stack first. Hackathon requirements usually explain the available resources, judging criteria, and expected deliverables, so use those details to guide your preparation.

Keep the first project very small and build a complete prototype from beginning to end. Break it into four parts: input, the main feature, output, and a simple interface. A small web app, automation tool, dashboard, or basic game can work well. Test it with a few realistic examples, then prepare a short demo. Only learn new libraries when the project actually needs them.
