I'm 34 and currently working in a Tier 2 help desk role in the Washington, D.C. area. I've earned Network+, Security+, and AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner this year, and I'm studying for the Red Hat EX200 certification before pursuing EX294. With layoffs happening across parts of the tech industry, I'm wondering how stable Linux administrator and Red Hat administrator roles are. Would my background and certifications make it realistic to move into a more secure position, particularly in government or defense contracting?

There are usually plenty of on-site Linux systems administrator openings around Washington, D.C. The market can change, but Linux skills remain in demand across government, contractors, and infrastructure teams. Searching regularly for local postings should give you a good sense of the opportunities.
With Security+ and a Red Hat Certified System Administrator credential, you’d be a reasonable candidate for military and government contractor roles in the area. The biggest factor is usually whether you can obtain or already hold a security clearance. A public trust helps, but many positions require a higher level of clearance.
The D.C. area has a particularly strong market for Linux professionals who can qualify for a security clearance. Defense contractors and consulting firms frequently hire for Linux administration, infrastructure, and security-related roles, so completing the Red Hat certifications could help you stand out.
You may also want to search for ISSO positions. They can be a practical entry point into government security work, especially if you combine your Linux background with Security+ and experience documenting or maintaining controls.
