I recently bought this PC second-hand and I'm facing a bit of a challenge. The CPU cooler is only leaving about a 1-2cm gap between it and the rear fan slot. I'm wondering if it would be a better idea to just install the exhaust fan on the top of the case instead. Any advice on this?

What kind of case and CPU cooler are you using? A photo would help too, as the specific models can make a difference.
Top exhaust fans are definitely a common solution and should work well for you. If you can, posting a picture of your setup would really help get more specific advice!
Using a top exhaust fan is perfectly fine. Honestly, you probably won't notice much difference in performance, especially if your case isn't designed for negative pressure. Make sure the cooler is installed correctly, as most ATX setups and cases are quite standardized, so there should usually be enough room for a rear fan without too much hassle.
