How to Reignite My Passion for Programming After a Layoff?

Hey everyone! I could really use some advice on getting back my motivation to program after being laid off. I've been out of work since November 25, 2025, and honestly, I've begun to dread the thought of programming altogether. I can feel my skills fading, which is messing with my confidence for interviews as well. I've got a year of experience as a Software Developer, but I've been programming for about five years now. Any tips on how to get back into it?

One strategy that works for me is creating a daily task list with small, achievable goals each morning. For example, I might plan to calibrate a tool, spend 15 minutes on a math tutorial, or learn a new programming pattern. Just getting started is often the hardest part, so keeping tasks simple helps me a lot!

I've had my own time off since October, and I needed it to recharge. I always wanted to create games, so I've been learning C# and experimenting with Unity. Exploring different projects and just having fun with it without the pressure has been a great way to get back into the groove! If you can, take your time to find what excites you again. Otherwise, focus on maintaining your skills while looking for job opportunities.

Don’t give up! Focus on learning things that make you happy, even if they aren't directly related to programming. Once you connect with what brings you joy, everything else tends to fall into place. Just go with the flow instead of forcing it!

I totally understand where you're coming from. When I was a tech product manager, I went through a phase where I just lost my drive after a couple of contract jobs. It really hit me hard when I got close to landing jobs but ended up rejected. That put me off coding for months! I wish I had found the secret sauce to stay motivated. You’re not alone in this!

Take some time for yourself! Rest up, catch up on sleep, and then think about what you enjoyed in programming. Explore tech tools that interest you. Find something that excites you and dive into it—it could reignite your passion!
