I'm planning a workstation build with a Ryzen 9 9950X, running either at 105 W Eco Mode or around 142 W PPT instead of its 230 W stock limit. I'm considering a Noctua NL-LC1-36 AIO because I want the lowest possible temperatures and would like to use the top of the case as an exhaust path without a large tower cooler blocking it. How concerned should I be about coolant leaking onto the other components with a reputable modern AIO from brands such as Noctua, ASUS, or Arctic? Is leakage about as likely as an NVMe drive suddenly failing, or is it more of a realistic long-term concern?

Leakage is possible, but with a modern, reputable AIO it’s extremely uncommon. The more realistic long-term failure is the pump wearing out, not the tubes suddenly emptying onto your components. A properly mounted AIO with good tubing is generally low risk, though the risk is never literally zero.
I wouldn’t treat leakage as a major concern, but I would plan around the AIO’s service life. Some builders replace them after about five years as preventative maintenance, while others keep using them until the pump fails. There are exceptions—a Kraken Z73 owner reported a leak before three years—but that appears to be an outlier rather than the typical experience.
AIOs can last a surprisingly long time. I had an older Corsair unit run for roughly 12 years without a leak or pump problem, and other people have had similarly long-lived units. That’s only anecdotal evidence, but widespread reports of catastrophic leaks are still quite rare.
Mine has also been running for years. I’ve replaced the fans and cleaned the radiator, but the loop itself has never leaked or lost cooling performance.
For a 9950X limited to 105 W or 142 W PPT, a good air cooler would probably be sufficient. The temperature difference may only be a few degrees in many workloads, with a larger gap mainly appearing under sustained heavy loads. An AIO can still make sense if you specifically want a clear top exhaust path, lower noise, or the appearance, but it isn’t strictly necessary for that power limit.

That makes sense. I’m leaning toward the Noctua partly because I trust the company’s support and build quality, even if it costs more.
