My HP 15-fd0023dx with a Core i3-1215U suddenly powered off when the battery indicator showed about 22%. I'm not completely sure whether it happened before or while I was reaching for the charger, but I believe the laptop was already off before the charger was connected. Since then, it has shown no response at all: pressing the power button does nothing, holding it for 30–40 seconds has not helped, and there are no charging or power LEDs. I connected the original charger directly to a wall outlet and left it plugged in for about 30 minutes, but nothing changed. The charger becomes slightly warm. The laptop had initially been connected through an extension cord using a 3-to-2-prong adapter, although the outlet measured around 118 V. The battery looks normal and is not swollen. I have not opened the laptop yet, but someone with more electronics experience may inspect it. Could the problem be a failed battery, charging circuit, motherboard, or another component?

A battery can fail suddenly, even when the percentage is still around 22%, and the laptop may then shut down instead of reaching zero. Try leaving it connected to the original charger for several hours, preferably directly from a wall outlet. If it still has no charging light or any other response, the battery or the laptop’s charging or power circuitry may need to be tested and possibly replaced. Since the machine is fairly new, professional service or warranty support would be a good next step rather than repeatedly forcing it to start.
