My HP DeskJet 4100 series printer makes the usual printing sounds and feeds paper normally, but every page comes out blank. This happens with black-and-white, grayscale, and color documents, even though the ink appears full. I can currently control the printer through its app and am not sure whether the problem is the cartridges, printhead, or printer setup. What should I try to diagnose and fix it?

The most likely cause is a clogged or dried-out cartridge printhead, especially if the printer has been unused for a while or lost power while the heads were uncapped. Old cartridges can also stop working even when they still contain ink. Try printing the printer's built-in test or diagnostic page. If that also comes out blank, replace the affected cartridge with a new, in-date one. Cleaning may help temporarily, but it often only produces faint or streaky text.
Check the cartridge expiration date as well as the ink level. Some HP cartridges can be rejected or fail to print once they are past their date, even if the ink is still visibly present. A fresh cartridge is a simple way to test whether the cartridge itself is the problem.
