I dropped my HP laptop a day or two ago, and the charging port or cable connection was damaged in the process. I found other chargers that physically fit, but the battery now stays at 37% instead of increasing. The system says it is plugged in, but it does not show a charging speed. Could the damaged port or charging circuitry be the problem, or might the replacement chargers be incompatible?

Some HP laptops do not properly charge with generic or universal adapters, even when the plug fits. The replacement charger may only be supplying enough power to keep the laptop running rather than enough to charge the battery. Try a charger designed specifically for that model, and avoid continuing to use the laptop if the damaged port is loose, hot, or sparking.
Since the charging port was physically damaged, the port or an internal charging component is more likely than a suddenly failed battery. A charger can fit while still having the wrong voltage, wattage, or connector wiring, so compare the replacement chargers with the specifications on the original HP charger. If the battery remains at 37% with a known-compatible charger, have the port inspected before the laptop runs out of power.
I tried another charger too, but it may also be a universal one, so I still need to verify whether either charger actually matches the laptop's required specifications.
