I spilled espresso on my Acer Aspire 3—what should I do next?

I accidentally spilled about half a shot of unsweetened espresso onto my Acer Aspire 3 keyboard while studying. I immediately put the laptop in a tent position and left it that way for about 24 hours. It now powers on and appears to work, but the keys feel slightly sticky and the keyboard smells strongly of coffee. I can't find high-concentration isopropyl alcohol locally, although laptop technicians are available. Should I stop using it and have the inside cleaned, or is the laptop probably safe now?

The laptop may be okay, and the most likely lasting issue is sticky or unreliable keys, but the spill could have reached the keyboard circuitry or motherboard. Back up your important files while it still works, then arrange a proper inspection instead of continuing to use it normally.

Shut it down again, unplug the charger, and don’t keep testing it while there may still be liquid or coffee residue inside. If you’re comfortable opening it, disconnect the battery; otherwise take it to a technician. Coffee can remain trapped between tight surfaces and cause corrosion or keyboard problems later. The keyboard may need cleaning or replacement even if the rest of the laptop is fine.

MellowPine42: So it’s better not to rely on the fact that it turned on normally after drying for a day?

CedarOrbit5: Right. Powering on successfully is encouraging, but it doesn’t remove residue or rule out delayed corrosion.

Once it’s completely disconnected from power and dry, clean the affected keyboard area with the highest-purity isopropyl alcohol you can obtain. Avoid pouring liquid into the laptop, and don’t use ordinary cleaning products or heavily soaked wipes. If you can’t get suitable alcohol, having a repair shop disassemble and clean it is the safer option.

BrightNook31: Isopropyl alcohol is just the usual name for the electronics-safe cleaning alcohol; higher purity leaves less water behind.
