I recently built a budget gaming PC with 16GB of DDR3 RAM instead of going with 8GB of DDR4. I'm wondering if this setup is good enough for gaming, considering the differences in RAM generations and capacities.

Comparing RAM types directly isn't easy since most systems only support one kind. Typically, if you're using DDR3, your CPU might be older and slower, which could limit your gaming experience.

For casual gaming, 16GB of DDR3 could work fine, but many modern games will definitely run better on a newer setup with DDR4. It’s all about what types of games you plan to play.

In terms of capacity, 16GB is obviously better, but speed is where things get tricky. DDR4 generally offers faster speeds compared to DDR3, which might affect overall performance in more demanding games.

It really depends on your whole system setup. If you have an older CPU with DDR3, like a Core 2 Quad, you might struggle with modern games. Meanwhile, a newer CPU with only 8GB of DDR4 will outperform it even with less RAM.

Most boards only handle one RAM type, often sticking to DDR3 for older systems. So if you've got DDR3, you might be looking at a setup that's outdated for latest AAA games, and performance could suffer.
