Is $200 a Fair Price to Repair a Lenovo IdeaPad S340 Power Issue?

My Lenovo IdeaPad S340 has been reliable since the pandemic, but it recently developed power problems and no longer seems to hold a charge. A technician diagnosed a failed PQ311 MOSFET that is shorting to ground and quoted me $200 for the repair. I need the laptop for school next week, so I'm wondering whether that price is reasonable or if I should get another estimate. Would replacing the battery be worth considering too?

$200 sounds reasonable if it includes both the diagnosis and the repair. The MOSFET itself is inexpensive, but board-level microsoldering requires specialized equipment and experience. A similar repair can easily cost around $150–$200 because you’re paying mostly for the technician’s labor and skill. Ask whether they can complete it before you need it for school, since the turnaround time may depend on their workload.

Before approving the repair, confirm exactly what the $200 includes and ask whether there is any warranty on the work. Since you need the laptop soon, get a realistic completion date as well. If the battery is also worn out, fixing the charging circuit alone may not restore good battery life.

Even though the part may only cost a few dollars, the testing, equipment, and repair expertise make the total quote fairly normal. QuietMaple31: It may also be worth asking for a battery replacement quote while the laptop is being serviced. Replacement batteries can be relatively inexpensive, but the battery should be tested first rather than replaced automatically.
