Is 8GB of single-channel RAM causing low FPS on my i5-11400F and RTX 3060?

I recently bought a used gaming PC with an i5-11400F, RTX 3060 12GB, ASUS Prime H510M-A motherboard, and Windows 11. While replacing the stock CPU cooler, I damaged one of the two RAM slots, so the system currently runs with only one 8GB DDR4-2666 stick in single-channel mode. I tested multiple memory sticks and configurations, and the damaged slot appears to be completely unusable.

My current performance is around 120–170 FPS in Overwatch 2 on Low settings, 120–150 FPS early in League of Legends and 70–100 FPS late game, and often under 100 FPS in Warframe. GPU, CPU, and memory usage do not always appear to be very high.

Would replacing the motherboard and installing a matched 16GB 2x8GB dual-channel DDR4 kit noticeably improve my FPS and frame-time consistency? Are these results actually normal for this hardware, or is the single 8GB stick likely holding the system back? I paid about $600 for the PC and am feeling pretty stressed because I saved a lot for it and can no longer return it.

The single-channel 8GB configuration is probably the biggest issue. One stick of relatively slow DDR4 can reduce performance and cause worse minimum FPS or more stuttering, especially in CPU-limited games. Replacing the motherboard and using a matched 2x8GB DDR4 kit should make the system smoother and may improve average FPS, although the exact gain depends on the game and settings. Enable XMP in the BIOS after installing the new memory.

Those frame rates are not disastrous for an i5-11400F and RTX 3060, especially at 1080p with settings and game scenes that are CPU-limited. The RTX 3060 is still a reasonable 1080p card, and the 11400F is not a massive bottleneck. Upgrade to 16GB dual-channel RAM when you can, but you do not need to panic or replace the whole computer.

A compatible B560 motherboard may be an affordable replacement, and you could sell the damaged board for parts. If you are not comfortable installing a motherboard, having a repair shop do it is safer. Buy a matched 2x8GB kit rather than adding a random second stick, and check the board's memory support before purchasing.
